Melanie Baker

Melanie Baker is a Newcastle-based songwriter whose work balances emotional candour with wit, theatricality, and an increasingly expansive alt-rock sound. 

While her early work was rooted in intimate, diaristic reflections on love, exhaustion, and mental health, Baker’s creative direction shifted decisively once she began touring as a full band. Joined by drummer Adam Robson and multi-instrumentalist Jon Evans, her songwriting grew bolder and more collaborative: choruses widened, arrangements sharpened, and her vocals evolved from delicate precision into something stranger, tougher, and more playful. Melanie Baker became not just a solo project, but a band — louder, more theatrical, and more fun, without sacrificing emotional truth.

Influenced by the gritty lyricism of artists such as Patti Smith and Courtney Barnett, Baker’s writing now embraces a skewed, comic sensibility that reframes everyday anxieties through exaggeration and absurdity. Baker’s art thrives in the messy, glorious space between pain and play — finding humour in heartbreak and hope in absurdity. Confessional storytelling remains at the core of her work, but it is increasingly animated by self-awareness, imagination, and a refusal to remain fixed in place.

At its core, Melanie Baker’s work is about transformation: finding ways to laugh at despair without diminishing it, and using collaboration, imagination, and noise as tools for survival.
