Kristian Finne Kristensen's Underbelly

Kristian Finne Kristensen's Underbelly

In Underbelly, Kristian Finne Kristensen of Chorus Grant leads us on a journey of music, spoken word and field recordings, into a world of creativity that is hidden outside, in plain sight, and hidden inside, in all of us.

The journey of Kristensen's five part podcast and accompanying album begins with his habit of humming spontaneous melodies into his phone - while walking down the street or up the stairs to his apartment.

Yet, this simple habit takes on a life of its own as Kristensen notices the boundary between his internal melodies and the external sounds of the world beginning to dissolve. The incidental sounds of cars driving by, sounds of the world outside, begin to surface in these phone recordings as equally significant as his own melodies.

Mystical, yet relatable, Underbelly asks us to reconsider where the border is between our inner and outer worlds. How much are the sounds of the world around us shaping the music that we typically consider our own? Or are Kristensen's melodies no different than the sounds of the world outside the window? The accompanying album Underbelly fuses these two worlds of sound - the inner and the ambient. By the end, it's unclear whether Underbelly is Kristensen's album or whether it is the world's.
