Molina reveals an ethereal live session of ‘Hey Kids’ from her EP "Vanilla Shell"
Evoking the surreal, spacy nostalgia of (perhaps) an extra-dimensional nightclub crossed with an 80’s prom night photoshoot, Molina’s new live session of ‘Hey Kids’ is invading earth this Wednesday.
This surreal live session of ‘Hey Kids’ from Molina is coming out following the January release of her debut EP, Vanilla Shell.
Just as she melds genres in her alternative synth-pop universe, Molina blurs the lines in this arty session between fact and fiction. With other-worldly ambience and the juxtaposition of multiple takes, the session comes across as a visual-art/live session hybrid, raising questions of what is live and what is dreamt.
Molina and her band also artistically probe the boundary between performer and viewer. We alternate between watching the session on a television screen in a separate room — building the illusion that we are removed from her world — and making sudden, unexpected eye contact with Molina, pulling the viewer into the scene.
Lighting up the online world in 2018 with high praise from Clash Magazine, HighClouds, and Indie Shuffle, ‘Hey Kids’ has firmly taken its place as the anthem of Molina’s sophomore EP Vanilla Shell. Released in January, Vanilla Shell has since won the adoration of many, including Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber and The Line of Best Fit. And two years after the initial single release of ‘Hey Kids’, the song is still on repeat around the world, charming listeners with a glimpse into her surreal alternate universe.
Come for the mystifying 80’s vibe of this dreamy live session from Molina, but also be sure to stay until the end - to hear her drummer’s words of wisdom...
