Melanie Baker releases final LP reveal “Real Life”
Newcastle-based college rock newcomer Melanie Baker shares final LP reveal ‘Real Life’, out today taken from upcoming debut LP Somebody Help Me, I’m Being Spontaneous!, arriving April 10th via yours truly.
A suspenseful earworm of an alt-rock single, bursting with her signature attitude, Baker’s latest offering blends chaotic joy with existential doubt, exploring control and self-perception, whilst questioning whether we shape our lives or follow a script.
Detailing her latest effort, Baker remarked: “As a queer person, I’ve spent a lot of time imagining all the different life scenarios and possibilities of who I could be, who I should be, who I want to be and who I actually am. I’ve spent too much time pretending to be someone I’m not, playing out these different scenarios, playing pretend, trying to “fit in.” The song is about the control, or lack of control, we have within our own lives and realities. Do we make our own choices or are they made for us? “Is this real life, is this just fantasy?” Inspired by The Truman Show, am I living a life that I have created for myself? Or am I living a life that I have no choice but to go along with? Am I living by my own rules or am I following the script so neatly written for me, without even really knowing it? I think we’d all like to think we’re in control of our own realities, our own decisions, but I think it’s actually very hard to cut the puppet strings we are attached to.”
